What is the Flawa FFP2 respirator suitable for?

We recommend our FFP2 respirator for medical/healthcare professionals, as well as for use in areas with large crowds of people/where interaction is required. The FFP2 mask is designed to protect the wearer and other people, which is why it is tighter fitting and also has a high particle filtration efficiency. The mask also protects against pollen and dust.

Frequently asked questions

What does FFP2 stand for?

FFP stands for Filtering Face Piece. FFP masks protect the wearer against particulate pollutants such as dust, smoke and aerosols. They are available in three protection levels: FFP1, FFP2 and FFP3. These are standardised throughout Europe in accordance with EN 149:2001+A1:2009 (corresponds to DIN EN149:2009-08). Respirators with higher protection levels filter out particles more effectively.

How is an FFP2 mask measured?

Around 10% of all inhaled aerosols remain in the respiratory tract. FFP2 masks filter out these harmful water and oil-based particles before they can get there. The requirement here is a filtration efficiency of 94% for all airborne pollutants, with a total leakage of no more than 8%.

How are FFP2 masks different to CPA masks?

For a protective mask to be classified as FFP2 in accordance with EN 149, a comprehensive procedure must be carried out in accordance with both Regulation (EU) 2016/425 on personal protective equipment and EN 149. For this reason, a shortened assessment procedure was permitted for “Coronavirus Pandemic Respirators (CPA)”. It is not necessary for these masks to undergo the entire EN 149 testing procedure. The test values that must be achieved are based on EN149 – specifically, the FFP2 standard – whereby the following points are assessed: usage simulation, visual inspection, putting-on test, breathing resistance and penetration of the filter medium.

Can I protect people around me by wearing an FFP2 mask?

When used correctly, the mask not only protects the wearer but also minimizes the risk of infection for people in the vicinity.

Will the FFP2 mask protect me against infection with the coronavirus?

If used correctly, are coronaviruses able to penetrate the mask, or is its only purpose to prevent the further spread of the virus?

FFP2 masks are designed to protect both the wearer and other people. However, the masks must be used correctly – in accordance with the information leaflet.

In every respect, the masks have been designed to guarantee the best possible protection against coronaviruses.

What is the filtration efficiency of a FFP2 mask?

FFP2 masks filter out at least 94% of particles. These masks are classed as personal protective equipment.

Where can I buy the FFP2 mask?

The masks are currently available to purchase in the Flawa online shop: www.flawaconsumer-shop.ch
The Flawa FFP2 mask is also available in pharmacies. We are also in the process of establishing additional sales channels. We will keep you up to date on ourwebsite: www.flawaconsumer.com

Do FFP masks equipped with a valve offer better protection?

The design of FFP masks may vary, with some products also having an exhalation valve. Masks with a valve only filter the inhaled air, therefore they are only designed to protect the wearer. If you also want to protect people in your vicinity with regard to the coronavirus pandemic, then valveless masks are recommended. FFP masks equipped with valves are designed for work in harsh ortoxic environments.

For how long can I wear the FFP2 mask?

The FFP2 mask is intended for use during a single work shift and cannot be reused (subject to the limitations detailed in the information leaflet)

Swiss protective masks, made in Flawil, SG

With over 100 years of experience, Flawa Consumer GmbH in Switzerland develops and produces cotton products and innovative fresh soles, primarily for the European market. In April 2020, Flawa responded to the supply shortage of protective masks at that time by setting up its own mask production facility. The expertise gained since then has transformed Flawa’s initial goal of ensuring domestic supply security into a long-term, third mainstay for the company, i.e. the production high-quality respirators; developed and produced in Switzerland.

The first batch of over 100,000 universal masks was sold out within minutes. Over several months, Flawa continuously optimised and expanded its mask production, enabling it to become the first company to produce FFP2 masks in Switzerland. It also manufactures additional mask types in the country, such as the widely used Type IIR face masks.

Flawa currently operates six plants for the production of various types of respirators, with two additional plants at the planning stage. Three of the existing plants produce FFP2 masks. The production capacity of these plants is around 500,000 FFP2 masks per week.

Flawa supplies its FFP2 masks to the Swiss federal government – other customers include retailers and foreign countries. Furthermore, bottlenecks in the procurement of raw materials due to increased demand are not an issue thanks to the company’s long-standing relationships with extremely reliable suppliers – the Flawa masks can be made ready for shipment at short notice. The filtration efficiency of the masks is regularly tested at the company’s in-house QA laboratory before they reach the market.
